Resorts World Genting temporarily halt operations amid Malaysia lockdown

Resorts World Genting will only continue to operate their essential resort-based services as interstate travel is banned across Malaysia

The Resorts World Genting (RWG) Malaysia has announced it will be “temporarily shut” from Friday (January 22) until February 4, following Malaysia’s Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s declaration placing all states in Malaysia under Movement Control Order (MCO), with the exception of Sarawak.

In a press release, Mr. Ismail Sabri (pictured above), who is also the Defence Minister, said ‘The MCO standard operating procedures are the same as I have announced before.

That means residents are not allowed out, except for – two from one household for daily necessities, including emergency cases. Interstate travel is banned across the country, while travel between districts are forbidden within those states placed under a movement control order.’

Resorts World Genting MalaysiaAccording to a Wednesday notice on the website of RWG, it mentioned that “essential resort-based services” at Resorts World Genting, including security, firefighting, utilities and clinics, would “remain operational”.

Resorts World Genting is owned and operated by Genting Malaysia Bhd, which is the only legal casino property in Malaysia.

Resorts World Genting had previously stated in a January 12 notice that “it would reduce its capacity and temporarily suspend some attractions, following a fresh movement control order imposed by the Malaysian government to parts of the country, to contain Covid-19.”

According to the Ministry of Health, Malaysia is currently facing a new spike in COVID-19 cases, with the national tally of infections amounting to 169,379, with a total of 630 deaths.

Genting has also felt COVID-19 pressure in the UK with casinos in Margate, Torquay, Bristol all closing and started the process of shutting their Southport casino, with 38 employees being put at risk of redundancy.
