Spectacular renovation for Macau’s iconic Grand Lisboa

Iconic casino resort, Grand Lisboa in Macau is to be given a transformative renovation to restore its status as the peak of luxury and casino entertainment.

The refurbishment, set to commence early next year, is set to breathe new life into this historic building, adding fresh and modern touches while preserving its rich legacy. The project will see the complete overhaul of all 430 hotel rooms and suites, ensuring that guests experience the epitome of comfort and sophistication. The culinary scene will also receive a substantial makeover, with new dining establishments set to tantalize the taste buds of the most demanding local and international visitors. These exciting changes promise to elevate the Grand Lisboa to new heights, reaffirming its status as a cornerstone of Macau’s vibrant entertainment and gaming attractions.

SJM Resorts mandate for Macau

SJM Resorts, previously known as SJM Holdings owns and operates the Grand Lisboa, located on the Macau peninsula. Established as Macau’s oldest gambling facilitator, SJM Resorts epitomizes the legacy of Stanley Ho, the “King of Gambling.” After Macau’s transition to Chinese sovereignty in 1999, the once-monopolized gaming empire has seen fierce competition emerge.

Last year, SJM Resorts, along with five other gaming operators in Macau, secured a fresh decade-long gaming license. The government’s stipulation required them to collectively invest US$13.5 billion in non-gaming aspects of their resorts, with each operator’s financial responsibility determined by their 2022 market share. SJM, holding a 12 percent market share, is committed to allocating MOP12 billion (US$1.5 billion) to non-gaming expenditures.

Grand Lisboa’s Resurgence and SJM’s Vision for the Future

The Grand Lisboa has been a landmark in downtown Macau since its opening in February 2007. It has been experiencing declining revenues since 2015. To stay competitive, SJM Resorts expanded into Cotai with the Grand Lisboa Palace, a $5 billion investment. Unfortunately, the pandemic delayed its grand opening until July 2021, and occupancy rates were impacted by China’s strict adherence to the “zero-COVID” strategy.

SJM Resorts is determined to reclaim its glory in both downtown Macau and Cotai. This makeover encompasses updates to all 430 hotel rooms and suites, as well as the introduction of new dining establishments, promising an enhanced customer experience.

The renewed interest in casino gaming and the Grand Lisboa’s potential resurgence highlight the thriving gambling industry. In today’s digital age, this interest extends to online gaming platforms, where enthusiasts explore top-rated operators.
